The 7th Ward Sisters are a group of women that meet monthly to address issues surrounding health and wellness pertaining to women in the 7th Ward. Programming includes monthly meals, wellness retreats, yoga, and more. For more information on the program, contact Blighted Property Manager, Darlene Fisher at 504-373-5117.
Community Yoga
Join us for Community Yoga, every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:00! A typical yoga class at the 7th Ward Neighborhood Center begins with a short sitting meditation, followed by a series of poses that take up the bulk of the class, and ends with another meditation. Taught by 7th Ward resident, Jackie Sumell, the community yoga class is one that should not be missed! Come ready to play! The class is offered at no charge and mats are provided.
Access to fresh food in the 7th Ward community is a constant struggle since the closing of the Circle Food Store after Hurricane Katrina. The garden at the 7th Ward Neighborhood Center, built by staff and neighbors, provides an opportunity for community members to learn gardening skills and to have access to fresh food. A fun and educational youth gardening program will begin mid-April 2010.
The 7th Ward Neighborhood Center is also happy to be a part of The Renaissance Project’s new Fresh Market. The Renaissance Project and the American Friends Service Committee have partnered locally to coordinate a monthly Fresh Market at Hunter’s Field. The first market was Easter Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the corner of St. Bernard and Claiborne Ave. Upcoming Markets will be Sat. May 8th and Sat. June 19th. This is an effort to bring fresh produce to the residents of the 7th Ward and to build support for the Campaign to Bring Back the Circle Food Store.
